Streetsbrook Road shuts 8pm to 6am nightly 5 to 16 October, and the M42 J7 link to the M6 north closes nightly 5 to 8 October. M42 weekend: 23 to 26 Oct.

Solihull’s traffic runs on a handful of corridors: the M42 down the eastern flank, the A45 Coventry Road past the airport, the A34 Stratford Road through Shirley and the A41 through the town centre. When one of them is dug up, the whole borough feels it.

This Solihull roadworks page is checked against the council’s own traffic orders, HS2’s closure notices and the National Highways daily closure report. It was last rebuilt on Saturday 3 October 2026.

This week: Streetsbrook Road shuts every night from Monday

The biggest borough closure on the council’s list is Streetsbrook Road, Solihull, between St Bernards Road and Station Approach, the road into Solihull station. It closes 8pm to 6am each night from Monday 5 October to Friday 16 October for carriageway resurfacing. The diversion runs via St Bernards Road, Grange Road, Warwick Road and Lode Lane (TR191).

HS2’s works between Bickenhill and Coleshill keep closing the M42’s connections onto the M6 overnight. From the National Highways seven-day closure report for 2 to 8 October 2026 (National Highways road closure report):

  • M42 northbound Junction 7a link to the M6 southbound, towards Coventry: closed 9pm tonight, Saturday 3 October, to 6am on Sunday 4 October. That is the last night of this run in the report.
  • M42 northbound Junction 7 link to the M6 northbound: closed 9pm to 6am every night from Monday 5 October to Thursday 8 October, reopening at 6am on Friday 9 October.

The report says only that diversions run via the National Highways and local authority networks. It does not name the roads, and nor does HS2.

Further north, near Castle Bromwich, National Highways also has the M6 southbound between Junctions 6 and 5 and the M6 northbound A38 entry link to Junction 6 closed 9pm to 6am on the nights of Monday 5 to Thursday 8 October, for maintenance.

What is closed in the borough in the next fortnight

Every one of these comes from the council’s own legal closure notice:

Road Dates Times Why For whom
Dunard Road, Shirley (outside number 38) 5 to 6 Oct Not stated Remedial works Severn Trent Water
Henwood Lane, Catherine de Barnes 5 to 8 Oct Not stated Pole changes National Grid
Longmore Road and Union Road, Shirley 5 to 9 Oct 9am to 3pm New raised zebra crossings Solihull MBC
Streetsbrook Road, Solihull 5 to 16 Oct 8pm to 6am Resurfacing Solihull MBC

Fentham Road, Hampton in Arden (whole length) 12 Oct 9.30am to 2.30pm Carriageway patching Solihull MBC

A word on each of them.

Longmore Road and Union Road close one at a time, at the junction where they meet, while the council installs new raised zebra crossings. The notice says only one road will be shut at any one time, with a diversion via Moreton Road (TR225 and TR226). This is one of the crossings in the council’s funded programme, covered in our zebra crossings story.

Henwood Lane is shut between Hampton Lane and Berry Hall Lane for four days. Its diversion runs via Catney Island, Friday Lane and Barston Lane (TR285). Dunard Road’s diversion is via Delrene Road and Geoffrey Road (TR218).

Meeting House Lane is closed for the day on Wednesday 7 October, with a diversion via Station Road, Kenilworth Road and Kelsey Lane (TR246).

Fentham Road closes for its entire length on Monday 12 October. The diversion is short: Marsh Lane and High Street (TR210).

What has finished since the last update

Everything in the borough list on this page on 29 September has now ended: Rowood Drive, Barston Lane in Barston, Friday Lane, Haseley Road, and the overnight closure of Houndsfield Lane at the Shirley railway bridge, which reopened at 6am this morning. None of them is still on the council’s temporary restrictions list.

The HS2 motorway weekends still to come

HS2’s own schedule, updated on 30 September, still gives two more closures in October, both listed as subject to consent (HS2: major motorway works in the West Midlands in 2026):

  • 22 to 23 October: M6 Junctions 4 and 4a in both directions, plus the loop and slip roads
  • 23 to 26 October: a full weekend closure of the M42 between Junctions 6 and 9 northbound and Junctions 9 and 7 southbound

HS2 says the October weekend also brings work on the M6 Junction 4a southbound link to the M42 in both directions, and restrictions between M6 Junction 3a and M6toll T1 northbound and from T3 southbound. Water Orton viaduct parapets follow in October or November, with no dates yet.

Earlier in September HS2 gave the second October date as a shorter closure of the M42 Junction 7 link. It is now a full weekend. Plan around that.

The A45 at Bickenhill, still there until New Year’s Eve

The longest restriction in the borough is not going away. The A45 clockwise at M42 Junction 6, the Bickenhill Interchange, is under a partial roundabout closure from the M42 northbound entry slip round to the M42 southbound exit slip. It started at 3pm on 14 July 2026 and is booked through to 9pm on 31 December 2026. It is on every day sheet of the National Highways report for 2 to 8 October, so treat it as a fixed part of any airport run.

The long one: A45 Damson Parkway junction, to 2028

The council’s junction upgrade at A45 Coventry Road and Damson Parkway, the turn for Birmingham Airport’s Terminal Road and the JLR logistics centre, began on 8 August 2026. The traffic order covering it runs until 7 February 2028, or earlier if the works finish sooner (TR160).

What the order allows, phase by phase and only when signed on site:

  • a 30mph limit on the A45 both ways from the Birmingham boundary to the existing 50mph limit east of the junction, and 30mph on Damson Parkway down to the JLR logistics centre access
  • phased closures of sections of the A45 around the junction
  • closure of Terminal Road for its entire length
  • closure of Damson Parkway southbound between the A45 and the slip road, plus a ban on the right turn from Damson Parkway onto the A45

The notice says “Full closures will be in place overnight or weekends only”, with diversions signed per phase. Questions go to damsonparkway@solihull.gov.uk.

Trains: a Wembley Tuesday and two Saturdays of strike changes

Chiltern Railways serves Solihull, Widney Manor and Dorridge. Its daily change pages for the next fortnight carry four dates worth knowing.

Tuesday 6 October is England against Czechia at Wembley, and Chiltern is reshaping the evening peak around it (Chiltern Railways, 6 October). The changes that touch this line:

  • the 17.21 Birmingham Moor Street to Leamington Spa is cancelled
  • the 17.33 Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill leaves at 17.37
  • the 17.07 Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street runs with 4 carriages plus first class, instead of 5
  • the 17.11 Birmingham Snow Hill to Marylebone calls additionally at Lapworth and Hatton

Wednesday 7 October, early morning: the line is closed between Wembley Stadium and South Ruislip until 6.30am for late-notice track work. The 06.04 Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill starts at West Ruislip instead, and Chiltern tickets are accepted on the Central line between central London and West Ruislip (Chiltern Railways, 7 October).

Saturdays 10 and 17 October: RMT industrial action. Chiltern expects to run most of its services, but the 06.44 Stourbridge Junction to Marylebone starts at Banbury and the 08.19 Stourbridge Junction to Marylebone starts at Birmingham Moor Street, the 18.02 Marylebone to Stourbridge Junction terminates at Moor Street and the 19.32 Marylebone to Stourbridge Junction terminates at Banbury. Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington trains are cancelled all day, and Chiltern tells Stratford passengers to travel via Dorridge on West Midlands Trains (10 October, 17 October).

This weekend’s only notices are late-night and early-morning engineering between Oxford Parkway and Oxford, which does not touch Solihull trains (3 October, 4 October). Chiltern had published no change page for 5, 8, 9 or 11 to 16 October when we checked. It loads finalised timetables into journey planners nine weeks ahead, and says event timetables can be released later than that, so check your specific train.

Station parking and the sensible workarounds

Parking at most West Midlands rail stations is free. Solihull is one of only four charged station car parks in the network area, alongside Bromsgrove, Longbridge and Sutton Coldfield, per Transport for West Midlands. From the operators’ own station pages, rechecked on 3 October:

  • Solihull: 446 spaces. £6.00 daily, £3.50 off-peak, £3.50 Saturday and Sunday, £22.50 weekly. Excel Parking Services has run the car park for Transport for West Midlands since 1 July 2024, and Blue Badge holders pay here (Chiltern Railways).
  • Dorridge: 104 spaces, free (Chiltern Railways).
  • Widney Manor: 277 spaces; Olton: 103 spaces (sizes per National Rail; neither page states a charge).

For the airport, the X12 bus, run by National Express, links Solihull station to Birmingham Airport every 20 minutes (Chiltern Railways). Train times for the wider commute are on our Solihull train times page, and car park prices across the town are on our parking page.

What it means for you

  • Using Streetsbrook Road after 8pm from Monday. It is shut between St Bernards Road and Station Approach every night to 16 October. Go via St Bernards Road, Grange Road, Warwick Road and Lode Lane.
  • Heading for the M6 at night. Tonight the M42 link to the M6 south is shut from 9pm. From Monday to Thursday night it is the link to the M6 north instead, 9pm to 6am. No diversion route has been published.
  • In Shirley from Monday. Longmore Road and Union Road take turns to close from 9am to 3pm while the new zebra crossings go in.
  • In Catherine de Barnes or Hampton in Arden. Henwood Lane is shut 5 to 8 October and Fentham Road closes for the day on 12 October.
  • Flying at the end of October. Put 23 to 26 October in the diary now: the M42 shuts for the whole weekend between Junctions 6 and 9 northbound.
  • Commuting home from Birmingham on Tuesday. The 17.21 Moor Street to Leamington Spa is cancelled.

Consultations you can still object to

Three new proposals went up on 2 October, all with objections due by 23 October 2026:

  • Coppice Academy School Streets: Coppice Road would be closed to driving for its entire length from 8.15am to 9am and 2.30pm to 3.45pm, Monday to Friday, with no loading at those times and no waiting at any time on short stretches of Coppice Road, Damson Lane and Foredrove Lane. Write to Mr L Stevenson, Legal and Democratic Services, stating your reasons (notice).
  • Lowbrook Lane, Tidbury Green: a new zebra crossing on the existing raised table near Fulford Hall Road (notice).
  • Monkspath Hall Road, Solihull: a new puffin crossing just east of Thornton Road, where the footway comes out from Crimscote Close and Hillfield Park (notice).

Objections to the two crossings go in writing to tro@solihull.gov.uk.

The Widney Lane traffic calming consultation, listed here last week, closed on 2 October. Kenilworth Road, Balsall Common, a proposed permanent 40mph limit, and 20mph limits outside schools across the borough are both still at the “considering consultation outcomes” stage, with no decision published.

Footpaths and speed limits still in force

Meriden footpath M231 is shut until 5 December. A temporary speed limit on Waste Lane, Balsall Common stays in force to 29 March 2027. Both sit on the council’s traffic regulation orders page.
